About MeI am proud to be a part of the learning community at Rancho Rosal Elementary School, and thrilled to be returning to the fifth grade Integrated Learning Center! This campus and staff quickly made me feel right at home so it is hard to believe that this is only my fourth year at Rancho. Even more difficult to believe is the fact that this year marks my fifteenth year in education. The time has truly passed quickly.
Prior to joining the team of dynamic teachers at "The Ranch", I served for four years at Camarillo Heights STEM Academy, where I taught the Kindergarten/First Grade SDC for students with autism. Going back a little further, I began my teaching career in Simi Valley for several years. Over the course of my time in that district, I taught in both a Special Day Class and a Learning Center. I began my career in education as a paraprofessional with Conejo Valley Unified, serving for three years as a classroom aide as well as a one-to-one paraprofessional. I have continued to learn and grow each year as an educator not only in the course of my teaching experience but also by attending many excellent professional development opportunities, including those offered through the Ventura County Office of Education as well as within Pleasant Valley School District. I received two teaching credentials in Special Education from California Lutheran University. In May of 2015, I earned my Master of Science Degree from CLU. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, with a music emphasis, both likewise earned at CLU. I have been married for 15 years to one of the kindest and funniest men I've ever met. Although my husband and I didn't have children of our own, we now have two kids! In the summer of 2016, we began our journey as foster parents, adopting the youngest in the spring of 2019. We are excited to be in the process of adopting the other child. Because this is a public site, I won't be posting pictures of my children but please enjoy those of my "fur baby". Mia, an Australian Labradoodle, joined our family this past spring and is in training to be a classroom therapy dog! |
Class News · Homework in my class will be minimal as research has consistently and conclusively demonstrated it to be only mildly effective in elementary-age students. There will be weekly spelling lists; however, rather than extensive nightly homework assignments, I ask that your child reads for at least 20 minutes a day. Both reading and listening to reading are beneficial for brain development, even in older children. Unstructured play is also crucial in developing creativity and problem-solving skills. When, and if possible, please encourage your child to play outside.
· Although I can be reached either by phone or email as shown above, our primary method of communication will be through an online application called CLASS DOJO, a behavioral management and incentive system used to motivate on-task academic performance and appropriate social behavior. You will receive an invitation to join the class via email and detailed instructions will be provided on how to access the system and sync the application to a phone or similar smart device. · In addition to Class Dojo for encouraging positive behavior, our class and school at large practices "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids" from the book of the same name. This is a great resource for helping students develop life and social skills. Another wonderful means of developing social/emotional skills is our Second Step curriculum. Weekly home links will be sent home beginning in September. · Our class will follow the general education curriculum in many areas, including mathematics, science, and social studies. The Language Arts curriculum currently in use for Special Education classes in PVSD is WonderWorks, which is more engaging while still addressing the Common Core standards. Students will also receive reading support from other programs, such as Sonday. · Please contact me at any time through this website, my email, or through the messaging feature on Class Dojo. I try to return all messages promptly. |
